Lab-Grown Diamonds UK: The Honest Buyer's Guide

Lab-grown diamonds have gone from curiosity to mainstream in less than a decade, and for good reason: they are real diamonds, they cost meaningfully less than mined stones, and their supply chain is far easier to trace. But the market has also filled with fog — vague claims, invented grades and sales tactics that make it hard to buy with confidence. This guide covers what we would want to know before spending our own money.

First, the basics: they are real diamonds

A lab-grown diamond is pure crystallised carbon — chemically, physically and optically identical to a mined diamond. It is not cubic zirconia and it is not moissanite; those are different materials entirely. Lab-grown stones are graded by the same independent laboratories (IGI and GIA) against the same 4C standards — cut, colour, clarity and carat — used for mined diamonds. What should a lab-grown diamond cost in the UK?

Meaningfully less than a mined stone of the same specification — the growing process removes the mining, sorting and long trading chain that adds cost to a mined diamond's journey. But prices between lab-grown retailers vary widely for the same size of stone, and the differences usually hide in two places: the metal and the grading.

Check the gold before you compare prices

Two rings can both say "solid gold" and be very different products. Most UK high-street jewellery is 9ct gold — 37.5% pure, the legal minimum that can be called gold in Britain. A 14kt ring is 58.5% pure. That difference is not marketing; it is struck into the metal itself as the UK hallmark: 375 for 9ct, 585 for 14kt, 750 for 18kt. Questions worth asking any retailer

  • Is the stone certified, and by whom? For larger centre stones, an independent IGI or GIA certificate confirms exactly what you're buying. (Ours is included as standard on rings with a 1ct or larger centre stone.)
  • What metal purity — and will it be UK hallmarked? Gold over 1 gram must be hallmarked by a UK assay office before sale.
  • Is the piece made to order or from stock? Made to order takes longer (ours takes around three weeks) but means your exact size and metal, made fresh.
  • Is the lab-grown origin clearly disclosed? It should be stated plainly on the product page — always.

A word on "eco" claims

You will see big environmental percentages quoted in this industry. We don't repeat them. A lab-grown diamond involves no new mining and a fully traceable supply chain — that much is fact — but its carbon footprint depends on the electricity used to grow it, so blanket "greener by X%" figures aren't honest. Buy lab-grown for the value, the traceability and the stone itself.
