How to Buy a Lab-Grown Diamond Engagement Ring Online
Buying an engagement ring online sounds risky — you're choosing something enormous, emotionally and financially, from photographs. But done right, it's how you get a better ring for your money: no showroom overheads, made-to-order craftsmanship, and time to think without a salesperson hovering. Here's the practical route through it.
1. Pick the setting style first
Shape and size come later; the setting defines the ring's whole character.
- Solitaire — one stone, nothing else. The classic for a reason: timeless, and the diamond does all the talking.
- Halo — a circle of smaller diamonds around the centre stone. Maximum sparkle, and makes the centre look larger.
- Three-stone — past, present, future. Elegant and a little different.
- Pavé and side-stone bands — diamonds down the shoulders for extra fire without changing the silhouette.
2. Understand the 4Cs — but don't be bullied by them
Cut, colour, clarity, carat. The one that most affects real-world beauty is cut — a well-cut diamond at a slightly lower colour grade will out-sparkle a poorly-cut "better" stone. Carat is weight, not size across the finger; an elongated shape like an oval or pear can look larger than a round of the same weight.
3. Insist on a certificate for a serious centre stone

4. Get the size right — or plan for it
You don't need to leave the house for this. The quickest route is to measure a ring they already wear on the correct finger: lay it flat, measure straight across the inside of the band in millimetres, and match that to our ring size guide. For a surprise proposal, quietly borrowing a ring for ten minutes is the whole job.
If you would rather measure the finger itself, order a set of plastic ring sizing gauges — a keyring of graded rings, two or three pounds online and usually next-day. Trying real sizes on the actual finger beats a strap-style sizer, and on a ring worn for decades it is the cheapest certainty you will ever buy. Measure at the end of the day, when hands are warm.
Then tell us. Send the measurement, a US size, or the ring you measured and we will confirm the UK letter in writing before anything goes into production — or leave it in the order notes at checkout. Most of our rings can also be resized within a sensible range afterwards, so a near miss is not a disaster.
5. Check the seller's paperwork, not just the photos

6. Buy the ring, not the myth
A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond — same crystal, same fire, graded by the same labs. What it removes is the cost of the mined supply chain, which is why the same budget buys a finer cut, a larger stone or purer gold. That's the honest trade, and it's entirely in your favour.
