How to choose a lab-grown diamond engagement ring
Start with the shape
The shape sets the character of the ring. A round brilliant is the classic, cut for maximum sparkle. Oval, pear and marquise-cut lab-grown diamonds are longer on the finger and can look larger than a round stone of the same carat weight. An emerald cut trades sparkle for long, glassy flashes of light, while princess and cushion cuts give a squarer, more modern outline. Every one is a lab-grown diamond.
Then choose the setting
A solitaire puts a single lab-grown diamond centre stage and never dates. A halo frames the centre stone with smaller lab-grown diamonds for extra brilliance. A trilogy ring sets a lab-grown diamond either side of the centre stone, often said to stand for past, present and future.
14kt or 18kt gold, never 9ct
Every engagement ring is made in solid 14kt or 18kt gold, in white, yellow or rose. 14kt is 58.5% pure gold, far more than the 37.5% in the 9ct used across the high street, and it is our everyday choice because it wears so well. 18kt has the richest colour and the highest gold content. See how 14ct gold compares with 9ct.
Lab-grown diamond quality you can check
Every lab-grown diamond we set is D–F in colour, the colourless range, and VS1 clarity or better. Rings with a centre stone of 1.00ct or above come with an individual IGI grading report as standard, at no extra cost, so the grades are independently documented. Our guide to lab-grown diamonds explains the grades in plain English, and our 1 carat price guide shows what a 1.00ct ring costs.
Getting the size right
Every ring is made to your size at no extra cost, in UK letter sizes, with half sizes on every ring. If you can borrow a ring she already wears, our ring size guide shows how to measure it in two minutes with a ruler. Not sure yet? Choose “Not sure — please advise” when you order, and nothing goes into production until the size is confirmed.
Planning a proposal
Each ring is made to order in around four weeks, including UK hallmarking where required, and UK delivery is free, tracked and signed for. If you have a date in mind, order at least six weeks ahead.
Your questions
What are lab-grown diamonds? Lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical composition, crystal structure and hardness as their earth-formed counterparts, and are grown in a controlled laboratory.
Will a lab-grown diamond ring keep its sparkle? Yes. A lab-grown diamond will not cloud or discolour with age; a gentle clean now and then keeps it bright.
Can you make a ring that isn’t shown here? Yes. We make bespoke engagement rings from a single reference image. Start on our custom jewellery page.
